What is The Keto Diet?

(“Ketogenic Diet Foods – What to Eat and to Avoid – Diet Doctor”, 2019)

A ketogenic diet or more commonly known as the Keto diet, is a diet that has gained popularity in the past few years, and has helped many lose weight, in just a few months. It consists of a low consumption of carbohydrates, but a larger consumption of fat-rich foods.

This would mean that your daily intake of carbohydrates would be around only 5%, while your intake of protein and fats would be much higher. On average the consumption of protein would be around 30%, and the consumption of fat at a high 65%. However, this intake could be different based on your lifestyle, and age.

Despite its popularity for weight loss, it was originally discovered in the 1920s, and was used by doctors to help control seizures in epileptic patients. However, many safer, and efficient medications were discovered in the 20th century, so the keto diet began to die down.

Foods commonly eaten on a keto diet are:

  • Fish
  • Cheese
  • Avocados
  • Meat and Poultry
  • Low-Carb Vegetables
  • Natural Fats

People on the diet stay away from eating fruits, as they contain sugar; a carbohydrate. As well as do not eat potatoes, rice or pasta as they contain starches. Overall, the main goal of the keto diet is to keep glucose levels low in your bloodstream. (Gustin, How To Start a Keto Diet: The Ultimate Guide, 2017)
